- OVERNIGHT HEALTH: All about Ryan
Paul Ryan was back on Capitol Hill to meet with House Republicans on Thursday, and Democrats welcomed him with a fresh volley of attacks against his controversial Medicare plan.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), who chairs House Democrats’ campaign committee, argued (again) on Thursday that the Ryan pick is a drag on down-ballot Republican candidates.
“Ryan has become a down-ballot disaster for Republicans across the country,” Israel said Thursday in his first update on the House outlook since Congress returned from its long August recess. “We have House Republicans who put their voting card in the machine and voted ‘yes’ to end Medicare as we know it.”
Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also said the Ryan pick will help Democrats.
“We were going to make this fight anyway, we saw this as essential,” Pelosi said. “Gov. Romney is making it easier … by embracing the repeal of Medicare.”
- House Dems see opportunity in Mitt Romney’s pick of Paul Ryan for VP slot
Democrats see Ryan’s new position on the GOP presidential ticket as helpful to their bid to retake the lower chamber.
- Dems raise funds to ‘Protect ObamaCare’
Democrats are hoping to draw on support for President Obama’s healthcare law as they fundraise for November.
In an email to supporters Thursday, the Obama Victory Fund 2012 asked for donations using an appeal from Stacey Lihn, the mother of a child with a heart defect.
Lihn also spoke at the Democratic National Convention earlier this month — an event that conspicuously embraced the Affordable Care Act.
- Pelosi: ‘Medicare is on the ballot’ with Ryan on GOP ticket
Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) position as the GOP vice presidential nominee is good news for Democrats who oppose his plans for Medicare, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday.
“[Mitt] Romney embraced the repeal of Medicare” by choosing Ryan as his running mate, Pelosi said.
“Governor Romney is making it easier” for Democrats on the campaign trail “by embracing the repeal of Medicare,” she said.
