  • ClearDATA Co-Founder and Chief Privacy Officer Chris Bowen to Speak at 21st Annual WEDI National Conference

ClearDATA CPO to Highlight Best Practices of Securing PHI in the Cloud

Phoenix, AZ, April 30, 2012 – – ClearDATA Networks, Inc., the leading healthcare cloud computing platform and service provider, today announced that its co-founder and Chief Privacy Officer Chris Bowen will be a featured speaker on the topic of “PHI and Cloud Computing” at the 21st Annual WEDI National Conference being held May 1-3, 2012 in Tampa, Florida.  Healthcare leaders from across the nation attend the WEDI (Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange) Conference to learn about and address issues of primary concern to the healthcare industry.

“Securing data and patient information is a top priority in our industry and many are concerned of potential security risks associated with moving PHI to the cloud,” said Chris Bowen, Chief Privacy Officer for ClearDATA Networks, Inc. “While safeguarding PHI in the cloud does introduce new security issues, it can also reduce or eliminate many security threats. Done properly, PHI in the cloud can effectively be more secure, and definitely more cost effective, than storing PHI onsite for a healthcare provider.”

WEDI Conference Session Title: PHI and Cloud Computing

    Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 3:25 PM – 4:55 PM

Abstract: Cloud Computing has become a popular choice to move/store data while leveraging speed and cost effectiveness. However, covered entities, business associates and all others responsible to keep sensitive date (including PHI) protected and secure have a lot to consider when moving into the cloud environment. Vendors are offering cloud technology; the federal government is mandating its business to move towards the cloud and NIST has been releasing Special Publications regarding cloud computing and security.

  • Merge Healthcare Releases Image Archiving in the Cloud Via Merge Honeycomb(TM)

Cloud Storage Expected to Account for 35% of Future VNA Image Study Storage by 2015*

CHICAGO, May 1, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Merge Healthcare (Nasdaq:MRGE), a leading provider of enterprise imaging and interoperability solutions, announced today the release of Merge Honeycomb Archive, a new image archiving application available within its cloud-based platform.

“With imaging accounting for up to 90% of all data stored in electronic health records, it is clear that image availability and exchange is critical to delivering quality patient care,” said Jeff Surges, CEO of Merge Healthcare. “Add in privacy rules that require storage of electronic health data, including digital images, and you see how the need to securely and cost-effectively store and share medical images has grown – specifically in the cloud.”

Merge Honeycomb cloud-based applications are designed to help healthcare stakeholders collaborate and improve the delivery of care while reducing costs. Merge’s newest cloud-based application, Merge Honeycomb Archive, provides a long-term storage option that houses images securely, in multiple locations, providing anywhere, any time access. It delivers comprehensive functionality in a high-availability, high-security framework that meets HIPAA, HITECH and other privacy requirements.

Merge Honeycomb Archive provides the attractive feature of scalability. As an organization’s storage needs increase, they can simply add capacity in Merge Honeycomb Archive. Another benefit of Merge Honeycomb Archive is its ability to eliminate the management and maintenance of onsite hardware, and the challenges associated with power, cooling and bandwidth. And because it is sold via a SaaS-based payment model, it removes the burden of having to make large, upfront capital expenditures typically related to hardware and software purchases, and meets the increasing demand for a ‘per click, per study’ model.

Image archiving is the second application available with Merge Honeycomb. Merge Honeycomb Image Sharing was the first application, which enables users to upload, download, view and share medical images. With Merge Honeycomb Image Sharing, users can learn the history of a recent imaging event or review prior studies before a current imaging exam simply by connecting to the Image Sharing network and requesting images from or sharing images with other providers or even with patients.

Merge Cloud Solutions consist of the Merge Honeycomb web application; iConnect Access, a zero-download DICOM image viewer; iConnect Share, an Internet-based gateway for image sharing between enterprises; and iConnect VNA, a vendor neutral archive which can be utilized to create an enterprise imaging strategy backbone. Merge Honeycomb interfaces with iConnect Share via secure web services to coordinate study uploads and to query uploaded studies.

To sign up for a free account with Merge Honeycomb, visit www.merge.com/honeycomb.

  • Practice Fusion Launches API to Democratize Lab Integrations

Practice Fusion is announcing the launch of its laboratory API tomorrow. A first of its kind, it allows any laboratory in the country to connect directly to its EMR platform.  As you may know, healthcare has been slow to adopt new, and more efficient ways of connecting. Practice Fusion’s lab API is bringing increased connectivity and interoperability to the entire healthcare ecosystem.

First-of-its-kind API enables any laboratory in the country to connect easily to the free Electronic Medical Record platform

SAN FRANCISCO – May 2, 2012 – Practice Fusion, the free Electronic Medical Record (EMR) company, today announced the launch of its new lab API, which allows any laboratory in the country to connect directly to the EMR. The lab API –first of its kind in the health sector – enables rapid deployment of new laboratory connections that would ordinarily take weeks or months to establish, giving over 150,000 medical professionals easy access to their local commercial, hospital and private laboratories. Practice Fusion already has 70 labs signed up for connectivity with the help of the new API.

“The process couldn’t have been easier and the Practice Fusion team was highly responsive in handling our feedback,” said Anita Miles, Executive Director at GYN PATH Services in Texas.  “This kind of innovation and service is exactly what is needed to digitalize the lab integration process and improve the entire healthcare ecosystem.”

    Key highlights:

    • Practice Fusion’s Lab API allows laboratories  to connect to the EMR platform instantly with almost no turnaround time
    • Labs can use the API connection to instantly send lab results to Practice Fusion users with  standard HL7 data files
    • Any commercial laboratory -including clinical, pathology, reference and hospital systems – can send lab results to users directly within the EMR
    • Minimal development is required from the lab and Practice Fusion offers free integration support
    • Over 150,000 medical providers using the EMR can connect to their national and regional labs of choice at no cost

Doctors are increasingly receiving electronic lab results with the help of EMRs, abandoning old fax-based transmissions that can result in increased downtime or errors.  More than 10 billion laboratory tests are performed in the US each year and tests are essential to the prognosis and treatment of chronic conditions. While the cost of independent lab integration can typically range from $1,000 to $2,000 per physician, Practice Fusion provides connections to labs at no cost to them.

Practice Fusion is using input from the user community and partner organizations to continue improving the design and functionality of the service. All upcoming features, upgrades and new laboratory integrations will remain free for providers.

Labs interested in connecting to Practice Fusion’s EMR should contact Erica Martinez at emartinez@practicefusion.com or request more information online. Physicians interested in signing up for the free EMR should visit http://www.practicefusion.com
