    National eHealth Collaborative will kick off new classes on February 1

    WASHINGTON, DC (January 31, 2012)National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) today announced the start of the NeHC University Spring 2012 semester. The new semester of this popular health IT (HIT) education series will kick off on February 1 and run through June.

    “Last year we welcomed over 7,500 attendees to our NeHC University programs, which shows that our stakeholders find the wide range of health IT topics we cover to be timely and relevant,” said NeHC CEO Kate Berry. “We will continue to offer high quality programs with expert speakers while allowing for audience question and answer sessions.  We will build on our successful education programs and add series on consumer engagement, health IT innovation, Beacon Community case studies, and more.”

    This semester, NeHC University will offer:

    • HIT Orientation: HIT Orientation will provide students with an introduction to HITECH and ONC initiatives, and a high-level view of the current HIT landscape in the U.S. This program will kick off the new semester on Wednesday, February 1 from 1:00PM-2:30PM ET and will feature Gwenn Darlinger, Project Manager at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
    • Spotlight Learning Series: HIE Leadership and Sustainability: NeHC will continue last semester’s popular HIE case studies series and will supplement the series with classes such as an introduction to the HIE landscape and an update on the Direct Project.
    • Introduction to the HIE Landscape: CapSite Senior Vice President and General Manager Gino Johnson will discuss their recently published 2011 U.S. Health Information Exchange (HIE) Study on Thursday, February 2 from 2:30PM-3:30PM ET.
    • Update on Direct Trust: Dr. David Kibbe will provide an overview of and the conceptual framework that guides the effort to help assure privacy, security, and trust related to Direct exchange, part of the Nationwide Health Information Network, on Wednesday, February 15 from 1:00PM-2:00PM ET.
    • Spotlight Learning Series: Consumer Engagement in Health IT: This series will feature a series of case studies and discussions on the benefits of engaging consumers. Presenters will highlight success stories and examine key opportunities and challenges to using health IT to empower patients to become more engaged in their own healthcare and to strengthen patient-provider communication.
    • Spotlight Learning Series: Beacon Communities: The ONC Beacon Community grant program is providing funding for 17 communities that are leading the way in developing secure, private, and effective EHR and HIE systems. This series will provide in-depth case studies of the Beacon Community grantees’ projects as they work to further build and strengthen their health IT infrastructure and exchange capabilities, leading to measurable improvements in quality and care coordination, and slowing the growth of healthcare costs.
    • Trends in HIT Innovation: As the industry evolves to meet the needs of patients and providers, companies and organizations are developing innovative programs and tools to increase patient care through better and more effective uses and exchange of health data. Last semester, HHS Chief Technology Officer Todd Park kicked off a series designed to showcase examples of cutting-edge HIT innovation. The next program will welcome Health Indicators Warehouse and Network of Care for Healthy Communities on Monday, February 13 from 1:00PM-2:30PM ET.
    • Payer HIT Trends: This class will examine the key challenges and opportunities payers are facing in the rapidly changing healthcare environment and how they are responding to these market drivers. This course will take place on Thursday, March 1 from 1:00PM-2:00PM ET and will feature Gary Austin, Principal and Co-Founder of TranzformHealth.
    • ONC Initiatives: NeHC will continue its series highlighting ONC’s HIT initiatives, including updates on the work of the HIT Policy and Standards Committees and the progress of the Standards and Interoperability Framework. Additionally, NeHC will welcome federal representatives for several discussions on upcoming HHS regulations regarding Meaningful Use Stage 2, Standards and Certification, and Nationwide Health Information Network Governance.  These programs help busy health IT professionals efficiently keep up with ONC’s many activities that are directly relevant to their organizations.
